We have been in our home of 21 years for almost two months without a main source of heat. The kicker is that we live in Central Minnesota and am experiencing a record year for snow fall. I love snow. Well, I mostly love looking at it snow but really really hate being cold. I do not function well when my shoulders become pedestals for my earrings. I’m all about presentation but do not appreciate the sore tired shiver induced pain from trying to stay warm in my own house. For months we have used a space heater in each bedroom and either lived in the basement where we have electric baseboard heat or in my studio with in floor radiant heat. The decision to convert our connected double garage years ago into my studio space really became a solid decision esp since the heat pump demise. It has doubled as the living- homework-hangout-clothes drying and folding-dining room art making meeting place since we discovered we didn’t need to unpack our refrigerated groceries anymore. The temperature at our kitchen island was colder than inside the frig. Actually since I finally took down most of my Christmas decorations, this fact inspired me to create a lovely still life on my kitchen island which included ceramic chickens and real lovely brown organic eggs. Inspiration is indeed everywhere. Luckily a new heat pump was installed last week and just in time. Today is a snow day for us all. Spring officially began March 20th but where we live we could possibly have another snow day in July. The snow plows are finally clearing roads at 3:37pm and tomorrow we will all be back at our posts taking school finals, making up make-up work, doing play rehearsal, and bustling off to address 100 grade schoolers about how a book is made. Today snow days and heat everywhere is sun in my house.
